I am helping to design an upgraded incident management system and it has occurred to me that by displaying abbreviated values and in some cases using icons as values rather than text:
1. More information about an incident can be displayed at the list level
2. Elements of the incident could be opened directly from the list rather than the incident record having to be opened first and then the individual element being opened and edited. Thus the paradigm of the process shifts from Incident List -- Incident -- Incident Element to a more direct Incident List -- Incident Element.
For example, resources attending an incident such as police, traffic commander and maintenance crew could each be displayed at the list level by an icon that changes colour according to whether the resource has been called, is on their way, is at the site or departed.
I'd welcome any feedback on this idea or examples.
